Is there anyone else on the site who can remember when it was compulsary to go
ashore in the "Rig"off a ship.
No civies in them days.
I think Teuchter would.

what year did civies come into play,1961 no civies first time i wore civies ashore was gib 1962,,does that help.

Was it that early? Wearing civvies ashore only really took off after the Irish problem got going. Mind you I think you were allowed to wear civvies ashore in Naval Ports or from bases about that time, but I believe a hat of some description was required at first as well as civvies.

I don't think Naval Ports abroad were classed as civvies areas until the mid 60's at the earliest, I remember being in Malta on a frigate in 64 and we used to take our civvies ashore in a grip and change once ashore (remembering to change back before returning to the ship) but if I remember correctly that was Junior Rates only!

nearly right there harry , but ive a photo taken coming back on board the striker taken before we got to malta and that was taken in of all places ADEN MAY 1961.

Aden - now there's a run ashore.......bet you loved it there eh? More sharks inside the net than outside and as for the ones ashore.......or you could always pop up to the crater and get shot away.......literally!

I bet Mick had a fellow feeling for the locals there!!!!
