Just came across this poem and had to share it as I thought it was brilliant. It's about the Cameronian Regiment and was written just after their disbandment in May 1968. The Cameronians were raised in the town of Douglas from the ranks of the Covenanters in 1689 and took their name from the the Rev Richard Cameron. They would go on to fight in almost every major campaign the British army was involved in over the next, nearly 300 years, and were known for their ferocity. They were eventually disbanded in May 1968 due to defence cuts. The disbandment took place at Douglas where the regiment were formed.

I have no idea who wrote the poem but it is excellent, please give it a read:

A sorry tale I have to tell
Of the Cameronian’s last farewell
On May the 14th 68
Parliament decreed their fate
And with one stroke of a Whitehall pen
Wiped out this glorious band of men
A band of men both loyal and true
Whom foreign foes could ne’er subdue.

‘Twas here on famous Douglas Moor
With men from families rich and poor
The Earl of Angus raised this band
With sword and Bible in their hand
They fought and bled without a pause
To save the Covenanter’s cause
So that here on earth’s green sod
Men could freely worship God.

When their enemies were mown down
They swore allegiance to a Protestant Crown
On Africa’s sand and neath India’s sun
Their many battle’s honour won
At Blenheim, Lucknow, and Lahore
Their Douglas tartan proudly wore
On Aden’s Rock and France’s Plain
The Laurel Wreath they bore again.

But now where the pride of manhood flowered
The Last Post sounds, the Flag is lowered
And in spite of victories bravely won
Their name is finished, their day is done
Britain may yet rue the day
This gallant band were swept away
But should we call, ‘Twill not be in vain
The “Cameronian’s” will rise again.

Aye Soldiers, good ones, dumped on by the Government - so Jack is not the only one!

As the old Romans said "si vis pacem, para bellum" or translated "if you wish for peace, prepare for war!"

Aye and that's the Big Problem - the bugger is stakr staring Mad - no telling what he'll do and of course his people are so shit scared of him they do as he orders - lets face it over here if you are given an order you don't like and don't obey YOU and only you go to jail! Over there if you don't obey the order all your family, including uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, the family dog etc. etc all go to jail and you get to watch your mother and father being tortured, raped and murdered- plus of course the people doing the job also know that if they don't do it it will happen to them . . . . . . . . anybody who can have his old Uncle blown away with an artillary gun for falling asleep has to be totally mad! One day of course somebody will suceed in totally him but when? How many have tried? Lets face it his family have run the place for a long time! Even close girlfriends (how do you get close to a monster?) have been killed for saying to wrong thing!

That'll be a bit of a comedown won't it mate? I had a tablet for a short while, couldn't get on with it, gave up and came back to this beast and now it too is playing up. I'm very tempted to just kick the whole damn set up into touch, but I use it a lot (too bloody much actually) and I'd mis a few of them as I speak to using it. . . . . . . even you mate!

With no TV that's one bonus I have - one of the main reasons I don't have one! Of course you wouldn't get away with that thanks to her indoors, mind you better to have her locked onto the TV than a free spirit wandering around the hose getting into all sorts of naughty things and with Sister Anna carrying her banner when she's up that way! No far better the way it is!
